George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer meets the Jon Egging Trust Team at RAF Marham

On 30th March 2016 Rt Hon George Osborne MP met Dr Emma Egging, Jon Egging Trust CEO and Si Taylor Youth Liaison Officer for Norfolk, on a to visit RAF Marham.

On 30 March 2015 the Chancellor of the Exchequer The Rt Hon George Osborne MP visited RAF Marham. During his visit the Chancellor was introduced to the work of the Jon Egging Trust, including Dr Emma Egging, the CEO of the Trust and 17 year old Nathan, who is a graduate of the Trust's Norfolk Blue Skies programme based at RAF Marham. Here the Chancellor speaks to Nathan about his experiences with the Trust. The Chancellor then went on to meet RAF Tornado ground crew and aircrew who have recently returned from operations.

George Osborne also met Nathan, a Blue Skies graduate, who is now at the College of West Anglia in Kings Lynn on a business course. Having found his experience with the Jon Egging Trust life changing, Nathan is now an ambassador for the charity inspiring other young people, and has ambitions to become a politician.

The Rt Hon George Osborne MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer said: “I was very pleased to meet members of the Jon Egging Trust team and to get an insight into the impressive achievements of the Blue Skies project.  It is fitting that fines levied on those that have demonstrated the worst of behaviour should benefit those that demonstrate the very best of values, such as the Jon Egging Trust. I am delighted that LIBOR funds will enable the Trust to expand and reach more young people across Britain.”

Dr Emma Egging, CEO of the Jon Egging Trust said: “I am delighted that the Chancellor has met Nathan, a graduate from our Norfolk programme, and found out how we offer life changing opportunities. In our work helping young people aged 10-16 to overcome adversity and be the best they can be, we are now on track to be working with over 10,000 young people each year by 2020. Donations and funding are vital to enable us to continue to expand and improve the life-chances of even more young people, and the Chancellor’s support for our charity is invaluable.”

Nathan, Norfolk Blue Skies graduate said: ”I really enjoyed meeting George Osborne. I’ve been looking forward to meeting such a huge figure for the country. Not everyone gets to meet the Chancellor, it just shows how high I can now aim thanks to the Trust.”

Blue Skies raises confidence and aspirations in young people who are facing adversity. The programme is established in five regions in the UK, and in Norfolk is run in conjunction with RAF Marham.

Nathan’s story:

“When I was 8 years old I was diagnosed with ADHD and had a hard time at school. There was never a good day. Then in year 9 I had a breakthrough. I was selected for the Blue Skies programme and went to sessions at RAF Marham.  With the Jon Egging Trust I was always part of a team and I learnt presentation skills and how to lead.  As a result of my newly gained confidence and skills, when I went into year 11 I became Head Boy – every single week I spoke at assemblies and was the leader in front of 1,500 students. It improved my life so much. I became a role model and the person to be looking up to.   I believe that without Blue Skies I would still be the same boy that was out of control, causing mayhem and the class clown. I want everyone who is struggling to have the same opportunity as me.”
