JSMTC visit Canolfan Addysg Y Bont

As part of our “Yes we can/Gallwn” project and the “World of Work” topic, Sgt Kev Webster and Sgt Charlie Charlton visited Canolfan Addysg Y Bont to talk about the exciting activities available for military personnel at JSMTC (Joint Service Mountain Training Centre) Indefatigable.

Using photographs, interactive quizzes and lots of equipment, Sgt Webster and Sgt Charlton talked about how they teach military personnel the key skills required for going on expeditions, such as canoeing, mountaineering and ice climbing.

One of the key skills is planning, and the students had to think about what they would need to pack in a rucksack before going for a walk in Snowdonia. The students loved trying out the kit, including a kayak, buoyancy aid, a drysuit, towlines, helmets and climbing equipment.

The Army’s core values were also discussed: selfless commitment, courage, discipline, integrity, loyalty and respect for others. All these values are relevant to life at school, when working in a team, as a class or whole school and in pairs.

Dawn Hoban, Deputy Head said “This was a fantastic experience for our pupils. The pitch of the talk was just right, with the different levels of students all engaged. It was lovely to see the students who don’t normally take part be so engaged. It was also a great confidence building session. Thank you.”

Thank you to Kev and Charlie for delivering two interactive and hands-on sessions. The students had a fabulous time.
