‘Love your archive’ Takeover Day

'Love your archive' Takeover Day

2017 is the 10th anniversary of the ‘Takeover Challenge’. Its aim is to inspire young people by offering them insight into a workplace and giving them the opportunity to experience a ‘real work’ role.

‘The students were so much fun to work with they were interested and inquisitive and achieved so much. It was such a worthwhile experience and the final display is stunning’ – Elizabeth Semper O’Keefe, HARC collections and archive manager

Four, Year 13 history Students from Ludlow College visited Hereford Archive and Record Centre, where they were given a brief to work as a project team to plan and complete a display for archive visitors to see. Their choice was ‘Christmas in Herefordshire.’ To enable them to do this they had a tour of the centre and an explanation of how the collections were stored. The girls worked together and successfully completed their display.

‘I learned so much about an archive and the work that archivists do. It has made me want to do this kind of work in the future.’ – Jess, Y13 Student

It was so good to see how much pleasure and satisfaction they got from this opportunity. This experience has inspired and motivated these students to want to work to preserve and care for national archives.
