Leadership and communication day at RAF Fylingdales

Leadership and communication day at RAF Fylingdales

Level 2 Leadership Blue skies students from York High School were wowed with a visit to RAF Fylingdales as they took part in a fun packed day of inspirational activities developing their knowledge and understanding of leadership and communication skills. The morning activities included a visit to the Radar tower to take part in a communications exercise, a missile simulation exercise followed by a briefing from the Fire and Rescue team who simulated a fire evaluation exercise. Students were able to use lifesaving equipment and successfully navigated their way out of the building. The exercises were designed to test students’ ability and build confidence in giving clear instructions and develop their listening skills. All students had the opportunity to lead part of the activity, learning new skills in effective leadership and team work. During the afternoon the students were set the challenge to build a fully working catapult, drawing on all their previous learning from the Level 1 and 2 programmes. They elected a leader and worked well as a team to support each other to successfully complete the task. Students were able to identify that effective communication was key. Troy aged 14 said: I have learnt that just having the knowledge of what we needed to know is useless, if you don’t have the communication skills or confidence to pass on the information to your team, you won’t pass the task. A truly fun an inspiring day with special thanks to Richie and Charlie who worked tirelessly to make the day a great success! Head of year 9 James Walker of York High School said: the exercises have given the students an insight into a world they might not have ever got to be a part of. Blue Skies is a perfect opportunity for schools to help find those future leaders and supports making leaders out of those who may not have ever dreamt of it.
