JET MARKS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN IN ENGINEERING DAY WITH A WOMAN ENGINEER FROM BOEING

Thurs 23 June is International Women in Engineering Day – an awareness day created by the Women’s Engineering Society that raises the profile of female engineers and focuses attention on the variety of fulfilling career opportunities available in the engineering sector. #INWED21 is the hashtag to follow on social media.

This year’s theme is ‘Engineering Heroes’ and we asked JET partner and supporter Boeing if we could talk to one of their engineers. We wanted to find out more about their chosen career path, what challenges they had overcome to achieve their goal, and what top tips they had for other budding engineers.

In December 2020 JET was one of 10 charities that received support from Boeing to provide much-needed resources, mentoring and skills development opportunities for young people.   

We spoke to Anu Hattie, a software engineer specialist and a programme test engineer at Boeing.

We think Anu is a hugely inspiring role model and she is definitely one of our #engineeringheroes. She pursued her ultimate dream to become a software engineer and is now inspiring the next generation to keep looking for new opportunities. Here are Anu’s six brilliant top tips for aspiring young engineers:

  • Don’t be afraid to push yourself.
  • Absorb and learn!
  • Be open to change.
  • Learn to adapt.
  • Don’t be afraid to try new things.
  • Keep a lookout for the next opportunity and make the most of it when it comes your way.

About Anu and her career
After graduating, Anu worked for two years in India as a software engineer. Anu then moved to the UK on a work assignment. In 2017, Anu joined Boeing Defence UK, originally as an Information Technology Project Manager, and then gradually honing her expertise in the careful management of digital information. She is now a Test Manager on the Synthetic Training Environment programme for the MOD.

Supporting the next generation of aerospace leaders
In a constant pursuit of self-improvement, Anu maintains several professional affiliations, including the Institution of Engineering and Technology UKWomen in Aviation and Aerospace Charter (WiAAC) UK, Boeing Women Inspiring Leadership, Women’s Engineering Society and she is also participating in Boeing’s Leadership Next programme.

Anu is also a member of the UK STEM Ambassador Network and assists Boeing’s STEM efforts across the UK to inspire the next generation of aerospace leaders.
