A penny-farthing enthusiast is preparing for his most gruelling challenge yet.
Richie Mason, from Wantage in Oxfordshire, will be taking part in JETRide and cycling 50-miles for the Jon Egging Trust in September, raising vital funds – whilst riding a penny-farthing.
“I’ve done JETRide before on a regular bike, but the penny farthing will certainly be a challenge. Averaging just 10mph, it’s going to be around five hours in the saddle. Every hill feels tough on this bike. So far, I’ve trained up to 32 miles and 1,000ft of climbing, and let me tell you – every hill feels bonkers on a penny-farthing!”
Richie has only been riding the penny-farthing for a year but already holds two world records – the longest penny-farthing stack (140 riders!) and the largest velodrome race.
Richie’s ride isn’t just about personal challenge. He’s riding to raise much needed funds for the Jon Egging Trust, a charity that builds confidence, resilience and aspiration in young people who are struggling to engage at school through its STEM and aviation-inspired support programmes.
“It’s an amazing cause,” Richie adds. “I’ve raised over £1,000 so far but I’m aiming much higher before the big day.”
JET’s Director of Communications and Fundraising, Fi Collins, says the charity is thrilled to see such a bold and brilliant way of taking on JETRide. “Riding on a penny-farthing really captures the spirit of resilience, determination and fun that the ride is all about! Every year we encourage riders to take on the course in their own unique way and we’ve seen tandems, Brompton bikes and teams in fancy dress, but a penny-farthing is a first for us – we’re all in awe and can’t wait to cheer Richie over the finish line in September!”
Now in its seventh year, JETRide returns on Saturday 13th September, offering routes of 50, 75, and 100 miles for cyclists of all levels.
The riders will depart and return to RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire. Registration to take part is now open at £35. Sign up and more information here
