From Blue Skies to Brownsea

Thirteen young people from St Aldhelm’s Academy on the Level 1 programme had a rather chilly start and choppy crossing on the Maid of the Island ferry to Brownsea Island. They were on their way to discover more about teamwork and found it really helpful to work together when they participated in some conservation work on a new campsite. Some students were pulling bracken growth, some collected dry wood to burn to keep the boiler working and others used wheelbarrows to take the wood to the store. The group achieved so much. Mr Gregory, a teacher from St Aldhelm’s said how very pleased he was that during the conservation work, everyone fell into natural groups without being asked and worked so well together on different tasks.

After lunch, the group got daring on the low ropes course and again discovered that they needed to help each other to get round the course. It was pleasure to see everyone achieve their goal.

Leo, 12, said he was pleased that working as a team helped him on the low ropes, while Callum’s ‘take away thought’ from the day was that he worked well in the team and didn’t cause a problem.

Thank you to the staff at the Outdoor Centre for their help with the visit.
