Blue Skies all the way to Brownsea Island

Blue Skies all the way to Brownsea Island

Last Thursday on a glorious sunny day, twelve Level 2 students from Ferndown Upper School had a great day on Brownsea Island. They were given the task of sawing branches to feed the biomass boiler on the island. They had to work in pairs and take instruction from Brian the warden. By working together, the group worked their way through a good few big branches and logs.

After sharing lunch with the peacocks, three red squirrels and Beatrice the deer, the group split into three teams and were challenged to build dens. The leader in each group was given a brief about what was required in the den and that had to be relayed to the teams. Callum said he was good leader because he listened to everyone and helped with the task, while Miles said he’s beginning to realise that he can make decisions to help the group.

The competition was a close run thing. Each den had the requisite items but the all-boys team had a slight edge. Well done to them.

Gabby Hyman from the Outdoor Centre said “It was great to see the young people really engage with the tasks they were given and take a genuine interest in the conservation work we do here.”

Thanks to Gabby at the outdoor centre for organising the event.
