Leading the way with the Royal Navy

Leading the way with the Royal Navy

On Thursday 27th April, our Blue Skies students from Glenmoor and Winton Academies had the opportunity to experience Royal Navy leadership training at its best. HMS Sultan trains young engineers to work on the Navy’s helicopters and now it was their turn to set some tasks for our students. From being briefed by Commander Mark Hamilton about the base and what they do there, through to learning about John Adair’s Action Centred Leadership (ACL), the students gained an excellent understanding of how to go through the process of leadership.

Students had the opportunity to see some of the aircraft that engineers are trained on, as well as being set some leadership tasks to try out using the ACL model. After lunch in the mess, students were put into teams with blindfolded members and they were then allowed into a hangar to complete a low ropes assault course. One person took charge of the group and learnt the importance of briefing the team, ensuring all were focused and how as a leader you don’t have to do all the work!

Molly, 14 said “I have learnt that everyone can be a leader and it is important to trust your team.”

The second challenge focused on joint team leading and working out a process under time limitations. Students were still blindfolded but leaders became expert at their part of the task which led to a streamlined process. Students understood the importance of encouraging fellow team members and the benefit that has in motivation.

Will, also 14 said “I understand now that communication is key when leading a team.”

It was a fantastic day and the students gained a lot of insight into leadership, the opportunities the Navy provide to develop oneself and the varied job roles available throughout the forces.
