Making discoveries at Denny’s Wood

Making discoveries at Denny's Wood

Ferndown Middle School students turned grey skies into Blue Skies when they visited Denny’s Wood, a training site for Winchester University Archaeology Department as part of their Level 1 programme.

The drizzly rain didn’t stop anyone enjoying themselves as they used the GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar), drew a map of a trench or trowelled in the main test pit.

During the day, two students made discoveries, the most exciting of which was by Max, 13 who discovered a Neolithic (circa 6000BC) flint cutting tool. Max thought it was really exciting to have made the discovery and wondered about the person who had used it last. The students also ‘discovered’ how important teamwork and communication is in this field of work.

Becky and James, both second year archaeology students from Winchester University were delighted that something so important was discovered and they were both impressed at how engaged the young people were with all of the activities and expressed what a pleasure it was to work with them. They were very pleased that some of the students showed particular interest in the day.

Thanks to Paul, David, James, Becky and Naomi from Winchester University.
