Tank Masterclass at the Tank Museum

Tank Masterclass at the Tank Museum

On Thursday 29th June, students from Glenmoor and Winton Academies visited the Tank Museum to learn more about leadership from the war heroes of the past. Sitting in a First World War tank, students heard the complexities of running these early tanks and the risks involved. Communication was extremely difficult and soldiers had to overcome these difficulties to help win the war. Using code and signals, soldiers developed a means of communication that worked despite the heat, noise and challenges of this very new technology.

The stories of these early tank commanders were inspirational and informative about how to lead well. The students were then given their own task to design a tank from Lego, which had to be driven over an obstacle course. In teams with a designated leader, the students had to study different tanks, come up with a design and then build a tank that worked, under the pressure of time. The design, build and speed of the tanks were marked and the group that won had produced an excellent design. Troy (14) said “This has been the best day. I really liked the tank building challenge!”

Claire Cooper from the museum said “The students have been fantastic and really engaged in all the activities.”
