I’m Michelle and I joined JET in 2018, originally as the Youth Liaison Officer for Hampshire. I am blessed to live in the beautiful New Forest with my family, and when I’m not working I can usually be found soapmaking, paddleboarding or practising Pilates.
Before joining JET my career has been varied – I spent 15 years as an IT Manager for an Investment Bank and 8 years as a Pilates teacher before retraining and working as a Secondary Maths teacher. All of this experience, plus being the Mum of 2 teenagers who are coming to the end of their school education, has given me real insight into the life skills young people need to succeed in whatever area they aspire to work in (be it the private sector, public sector or self-employment), but which go beyond the exam curricula of their GCSE subjects.
When teaching I was passionate about ensuring that my students understood not just how to answer questions to pass exams but also how and why it was relevant to their future aspirations and how it would benefit them when they left school. As a tutor I became increasingly aware of how many students lacked essential life skills but of how little time was available in the timetable for developing them. Joining JET has given me the opportunity build on that passion to equip young people for life beyond the classroom, open their eyes to the opportunities available to them and develop those skills which will make them attractive to employers and help them succeed in their future careers. Together with our amazing network of volunteers and corporate and military partners I aim to expand our reach in the region and inspire as many young people across Hampshire and Oxfordshire as possible to be the best they can be!
